Francroyable helps you keep and learn the French you hear every day. This policy explains what information the app collects, why, where it goes and what you can do about it.
The app is provided by EIRL John Dudmesh, SIRET 88210291600013, 2 Chemin des Houltières, 50150 Beauficel, France ("we"), the data controller for your information. Questions or requests: help@francroyable.com.
The short version
- We keep what you put into the app (your cards, decks, progress and chats) so the app works and syncs across your devices.
- To write cards, answer your questions and read sentences aloud, we send the text involved to OpenAI.
- We don't show ads, we don't sell or share your data for marketing, and the app has no third-party analytics or advertising tracking. When the app crashes or hits an error, a report goes to Sentry so we can fix it.
- You can delete your account and its data at any time from Settings → Delete account.
What we collect
Your account. Your email address, which you sign in with. We send you a one-time code by email; there is no password.
What you create. Cards (sentences, answers, hints and dictionary entries), decks, the built-in topics you add, your study settings, and your conversations with the tutor in Chat.
Your learning progress. When you answer each card, how you did, and when it's next due, so the app can schedule reviews and show your streak.
Credits and AI use. Your credit balance and every change to it, and a record of each AI feature you use: which feature, when, the size of the request (counted in tokens), its estimated cost, and the subject of decks you make with the magic wand. We use this to run credits, to understand costs and to stop abuse.
Purchases. If you buy credits in the app, Apple handles the payment; we never see your payment details. Apple sends us a signed record of the purchase, and we keep its transaction number, the product, the date and the credits added, so each purchase is credited once. If Apple refunds a purchase, it tells us, and we remove the credits it added (as far as they haven't been used) and record the refund.
Technical information. Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs (such as IP addresses and request times) for security and reliability.
Crash and error reports. When the app crashes or something goes wrong, it sends a report to Sentry: the error and where in the app it happened, your device model, its operating system and version, the app's version, and your account's ID (a random code, not your email address). The report also lists the screens you'd just visited and the addresses of the app's recent requests to our servers, without their search terms, and may include technical details of what the app was doing. For about one in ten sessions, the app also sends how long screens and requests took, so we can find what's slow. Reports don't include your IP address or your email address, and we don't record your screen or send the contents of your cards on purpose.
On your device only. A copy of your cards and progress so the app works offline, your drafts, recent searches, settings such as appearance, audio you've played, and the recording of your voice when you use pronunciation practice ("Say it"). These stay on your device and aren't sent to us.
Voice and speech
When you speak a phrase, say an answer or practise pronunciation, your device's speech recognition turns your voice into text: Apple's on iPhone, Google's on Android, or your browser's on the web. Depending on your device and connection, your voice may be sent to that provider to be recognised, under their own privacy policies. We receive only the text, never the audio. Pronunciation recordings stay on your device and are replaced each time you try again.
The app asks for microphone and speech recognition permission the first time you use these features. You can turn them off at any time in your device's settings; the rest of the app keeps working.
Who we share it with
We use these service providers to run the app. Each processes your information only to provide its service to us:
- Supabase (database, sign-in, file storage and server functions), in the European Union (Ireland). Your account and everything you create is stored here.
- OpenAI (the magic wand, decks made with the wand, Chat and spoken audio). We send the text needed for each request: the phrase or sentence you're turning into a card, a text you paste to pick phrases out of (with the answers of your existing cards, so they aren't suggested again), the subject and phrases of a deck you're making, your chat message with the recent conversation, or a sentence to read aloud. We don't send your email address. OpenAI states that it doesn't use data sent through its API to train its models, and may keep it for up to 30 days to detect abuse. OpenAI is in the United States.
- Resend (sends the sign-in code emails), which processes your email address.
- Sentry (Functional Software, Inc.; crash and error reports), in the European Union (Germany). It receives the reports described under "Crash and error reports".
- Apple (in-app purchases). When you buy credits, the purchase is between you and Apple under Apple's terms and privacy policy. The app tells Apple your account's id with the purchase, so the credits go to the right account.
When information goes to a provider outside the European Economic Area, such as OpenAI, it's protected by the European Commission's standard contractual clauses or another safeguard recognised under the GDPR.
We don't sell your information and don't share it with anyone else, except where the law requires it.
Spoken audio is shared
To keep it fast and affordable, each sentence is turned into audio once and the recording is shared by everyone who has that same sentence (for example everyone studying a built-in topic). The recording is stored under a code made from the sentence's exact text, so someone who already knows that exact sentence could find its audio. Don't put personal information you wouldn't want spoken in a card sentence you play aloud.
Why we use it (legal bases)
- To provide the app you signed up for (performance of a contract): your account, cards, progress, chats, syncing, sign-in emails, and the AI features you choose to use.
- Our legitimate interests: keeping the app secure, preventing abuse, fixing crashes and errors, and understanding and controlling the cost of AI features.
- Legal obligations: keeping records the law requires, such as records of credits you buy.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and what you create until you delete your account. When you do, your account, cards, decks, progress, chats and credit balance are deleted straight away. Our records of AI use, credit changes and purchases are kept for accounting, but with the link to you removed, so they no longer identify you. Hosting logs are kept by our provider for a limited period for security. Crash and error reports are kept by Sentry for up to 90 days, then deleted.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access your information, to correct it, to have it deleted, to receive a copy of it in a portable format, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to withdraw consent where we rely on it.
- Delete your account yourself at any time: Settings → Delete account.
- For anything else, email help@francroyable.com. We'll reply within one month.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, you can complain to the French data protection authority, the CNIL (www.cnil.fr), or the authority where you live.
Children
Francroyable isn't intended for children under 15, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we'll delete it.
Security
Your information is sent over encrypted connections. Each person can only reach their own data, and only our server functions can change credits or write AI replies. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and will tell you and the authorities if a breach puts you at risk, as the law requires.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll tell you in the app before it takes effect.
